Social and Literary Debates on Homosexuality: A Study of the Contemporary Urdu Novel “Us Ne Kaha Tha”

This article explores the concept of homosexuality from historical, social, and literary perspectives. It begins by defining homosexuality and tracing the emergence and development of homosexual movements in different parts of the world. The study briefly examines the major arguments advanced by both supporters and opponents of homosexuality, highlighting the cultural, religious, legal, and human rights dimensions of the debate.The article further discusses the representation of homosexuality in literary traditions, with particular attention to modern fiction. It investigates how literary texts have reflected changing social attitudes toward sexuality and gender identities. In the final section, selected passages from the
contemporary Urdu novel Us Ne Kaha Tha are analyzed to examine the depiction of homosexual relationships, identity formation, and the socio-cultural implications of such representations. Through textual analysis, the study demonstrates that homosexuality in contemporary Urdu fiction functions not merely as a personal or sexual phenomenon but also as a significant social and cultural discourse. The article aims to contribute to the understanding of sexuality studies and contemporary Urdu literary criticism by situating literary representations within broader historical and ideological contexts.
