The contemporary Urdu novel “Natamam” by Muhammad Asim Butt presents a profound portrayal of the social and cultural transformations that characterize modern urban society. The novel explores the gradual transition from traditional social structures to modern modes of living and highlights the psychological, emotional, and existential consequences of this shift. Through its complex characters and multilayered narrative, Natamam depicts the weakening of familial and social bonds, the rise of individualism, and the erosion of collective identity in contemporary society. This study examines the manifestations of social and cultural transformations in the novel with particular focus on urban alienation, loneliness, identity crisis, and the changing moral and social values of the middle class. The research argues that the novel not only reflects the fragmented realities of modern life but also reveals the inner conflicts of educated urban individuals who struggle to find meaning, belonging, and stability in a rapidly changing social environment. By analyzing these dimensions, the study demonstrates how Natamam serves as a significant literary representation of the tensions between tradition and modernity in contemporary Pakistani society.
