Allama Muhammad Iqbal was a great lover of knowledge and education. In his poetry, he openly expressed his philosophy of education. Since Iqbal went to Europe for higher studies, he observed that Europe had become deeply immersed in moral and spiritual decline. He believed that the modern Western system of education had also pushed the world toward misguidance. Therefore, he openly criticized this system. He observed that co-education in educational institutions had led to the spread of immorality and waywardness. However, he was not entirely satisfied with religious institutions either. He believed that religious schools should also incorporate modern scientific knowledge and educational activities.Iqbal held the so-called Sufis and clerics of his time responsible for failing to provide proper religious education, as they were teaching superstitious and unproductive practices instead of true Islamic teachings. He strongly urged the Muslim Ummah to follow and practice the teachings of Islam in their lives.
