Nar Naari: A Case of Attraction, Conflict, and Repulsion

Abstract

There is no doubt that Intizar Hussain is one of the most influential short story writers in Urdu literature. His stories have many layers and each reading exposes the reader to a new world. He also made the most use of oral narration in Urdu storytelling. Many of his stories were written based on folk literature, mythology, and religious texts. Nar Naari is one such story. This story has been interpreted in many ways. In this article, an attempt is made to explore the undying love of a traditional Hindu couple. How they do not leave each other even after facing severe trials from nature. No matter what happens to loyal people, they never leave each other. In this story, a man has half of his body that belongs to someone else, which torments him until the end. So, after a severe trial, he comes to the conclusion that the love between a man and a woman is immortal. No trial can separate them from each other. Although this story of Intizar Hussain is derived from an Indian myth, he has given it new meanings in the modern era. This is what the author has tried to explore in this article. After temptation, conflict, and trials, a person ultimately turns to his beloved.
