Abstract

This study examines the foundations, evolution, and intellectual debates surrounding Urdu Popular Literature, with particular emphasis on its relationship with public taste, society, culture, and literary values. Popular literature is understood as a form of writing that reaches a broad readership and reflects the social trends, cultural values, emotions, and expectations of ordinary readers. The study explores the continuing debate over whether popularity and commercial success can coexist with literary quality, arguing that popular literature should not be viewed merely as entertainment or a commercial product. Rather, it can serve as a powerful medium for social awareness, cultural expression, and the development of reading habits and literary taste. The study further highlights the changing relationship between popular literature and its readers, suggesting that literature not only satisfies existing public taste but can also  reshape and expand it. At the same time, digital media, changing reading habits, linguistic transformation, and publishing challenges are

creating new pressures as well as new opportunities. Audiobooks, podcasts, digital platforms, and contemporary themes can help Urdu popular literature reach new generations of readers. The study concludes that the future of Urdu popular literature depends on a meaningful balance between tradition and innovation, preserving the richness of Urdu literary culture while embracing new technologies, changing social realities, and evolving forms of language and expression.
