Historical and Cultural Consciousness in the Travelogues of Raza Ali Abidi

Abstract

Travel writing is an important genre of Urdu literature that has gradually developed from a simple record of journeys and geographical observations into a multidimensional literary form encompassing history, culture, society, human experience, and civilizational consciousness. The present study examines the historical and cultural consciousness reflected in the travelogues of Raza Ali Abidi, one of the prominent contemporary Urdu travel writers, journalists, broadcasters, and observers of social and cultural life. The study explores how Abidi transforms travel from a mere geographical experience into an intellectual and cultural journey through history, collective memory, social values, and human relationships. The research demonstrates that Abidi’s travelogues represent a distinctive synthesis of journalistic observation, historical awareness, literary sensitivity, cultural understanding, and critical insight. His travel narratives do not merely describe cities, roads, rivers, buildings, museums, libraries, and historical monuments; rather, these places are interpreted as living cultural texts that preserve the memories of human civilization. In works such as Jurnaili Sarak, Shair Darya, Rail Kahani, Jehazi Bhai, and Europe: A Journalist’s View, and Tees Saal Baad, history is presented as a dynamic process connecting the past with the present and influencing the possibilities of the future.
