Comparative Analysis of the Thought of Ibn Taymiyyah and Allama Iqbal

Abstract

This study presents a comparative analysis of the intellectual thought of Ibn Taymiyyah (1263–1328) and Allama Muhammad Iqbal (1877–1938), with particular emphasis on their approaches to Islamic thought, religious reform, reason and revelation, ijtihad, human agency, and the relationship between Islam and contemporary challenges. Although Ibn Taymiyyah and Iqbal belonged to different historical, intellectual, and socio-political contexts, both thinkers sought to revive the dynamic spirit of Islam and to address the intellectual stagnation of Muslim societies. Ibn Taymiyyah emphasized the Qur’an and Sunnah as the primary sources of Islamic guidance and advocated a return to the pristine teachings of Islam, while critically examining practices and ideas that he considered inconsistent with these sources. His thought reflects a strong concern for theological clarity, purification of religious understanding, and the restoration of authentic Islamic principles. Iqbal, while deeply rooted in the Qur’anic worldview, approached Islamic revival through a modern philosophical and intellectual framework. His concepts of Khudi (selfhood), Ijtihad, dynamic Tawhid, freedom, creativity, and reconstruction of religious thought emphasize the active role of the individual and the Muslim community in shaping a dynamic future. The study examines areas of convergence and divergence between the two thinkers, particularly their views on Tawhid, Ijtihad, human freedom, reason, revelation, Islamic revival, and the role of the Muslim community. It also investigates the extent to which Iqbal’s intellectual project can be understood in relation to earlier reformist traditions represented by Ibn Taymiyyah. Through a qualitative, comparative and analytical methodology, the study relies on primary and secondary sources to identify conceptual continuities as well as significant differences. The research argues that, despite substantial methodological and philosophical differences, both thinkers share a common concern for the revitalization of Islamic intellectual life and the restoration of Muslim agency. Their comparative study therefore provides valuable insights into the possibilities and limitations of Islamic intellectual reconstruction in the modern age.
