Abstract

Abstract: Urdu literature was influenced by western thoughts like other literatures. The character of Alia in Khadija Mastor’s novel Angan highlights this notion. To craft the character of Alia, the author imitates the John Lock Theory of Blank State, he states that humans are free from innate ability. They learn things through their experiences. Similarly, the same thing is reflected in the character of Alia in the novel. She was thinking of her past life that how she was happy, prior to her father’s transfer.  It was her first stage of conscience development. Likewise, she was learnt that men are not trustworthy in the case of her parents’ regular fights, her sister’s suicide, Chime constant struggle in love and the case of her neighbor’s Kasam Didee. Through these major episodes, Alia developed her conscience and remained unmarried throughout her life..
