The First Era of the Editorship of the Literary Journal *Sahifa* and Abid Ali Abid: A Research and Critical Study

Abstract:

Syed Abid Ali Abid was a Pakistani Urdu and Persian poet, educator and editor who was born on 17 September 1906 in Dera Ismail Khan, and died in Lahore, Pakistan on 20 January 1971. This research article examines the first era of the literary journal “Sahifa” and the editorial services of Syed Abid Ali Abid ،Published by Majlis-e-Taraqqi-e-Adab Lahore, “Sahifa” appeared in 1957 and soon became an important platform for research, criticism, and creative literature. Abid Ali Abid was the first editor of “Sahifa”, played a central role in shaping the journal for 10 years, from June 1957 to October 1966. His aim was to connect the classical traditions of Urdu literature with modern ideas and contemporary literary needs. During his editorship, Sahifa published research papers, critical essays, poetry, fiction, drama, translations, book reviews, and other forms of literary writing.

The article particularly discusses Abid Ali Abid’s editorials published under the title “Jama-e-Mutakallim.” These editorials dealt with important literary and intellectual issues, including the value of tradition, the development of fiction, literary criticism, translation, language, education, journalism, and the relationship between literature and society. His book reviews also reflected his critical insight and broad literary knowledge. He maintained editorial standards and carefully selected material for publication.

The study shows that Sahifa provided opportunities to both established and emerging writers and received valuable contributions from different parts of the subcontinent. Abid Ali Abid’s literary taste, editorial vision, and commitment to quality helped establish the journal as a respected name in Urdu literary journalism. His first editorial period therefore holds an important place in the history and development of Urdu literary journals.
