Urdu Marsiya, a significant literary form, has evolved over time, reflecting the cultural and historical contexts of its development. Initially characterized by strict meter and rhyme, early Marsiyas served as poignant elegies commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (peace be upon him) during Ashura. As the genre progressed, poets began experimenting with free verse and incorporating elements of ghazal, enriching its stylistic diversity. The thematic scope of Marsiya has also expanded, moving beyond mere lamentation to engage with deeper philosophical and intellectual issues, such as justice, tyranny, and human rights. In contemporary contexts, Marsiya addresses pressing social and political concerns, including sectarianism and social justice, thus remaining relevant to modern audiences. This paper explores the dual journey of Urdu Marsiya—its stylistic transformations and thematic expansions—demonstrating its adaptability and enduring significance in Urdu literature.
